I can't go anywhere without people asking me which EMR I use - or which one is "the best". There's no easy answer for this question... it really depends on what you need, if you can handle using the software, and what you can afford. Optometry EMRs are like Lasik - everyone wants it, but few have gone through with it.
I was at a CE meeting last night with about 20 other ODs and sat at a table with 3 other ODs. One of them began asking me what I use because he's in the market for some software. He has 3 rooms with an active optical. He's also about 60 years old, but still sharp of course. Would the software I use be a good fit for him? He'll find out soon enough - he wants to come over for a test drive.
One thing I know is this - don't buy $25K worth of software because your friend has it. Anyone can learn to use even the worst software. The learning curve is fairly steep even on the best OD software. So, when you're asking someone if they like their software, remember this: they have been using it and are comfortable with it. Ask someone if they like their software 1 week into it and you'll get a completely different answer from 6 months later after they've learned how to use it.
Get out there and try every program that is in your category of practice. Choose the software that jives with you - and the company that you like as well. If you are not technically savvy then opt for a company that has a reputation for great support. If you are a tech geek, then you can get away with getting something that is a little more hands on. You'll never know until you try...
